South Plattsburgh Fire District
In New York State, Fire Districts are public corporations which generally provide fire protection and other emergency response in Towns. A Fire District can levy taxes and incur debt. Although a Fire District operates under certain fiscal restrictions and guidelines, districts enjoy a great deal of autonomy in budgeting. A Fire District is governed by a board of five (5) elected Fire Commissioners.
Firefighting and Rescue in the Town of Plattsburgh is provided by five (5) separate Fire Districts. The South Plattsburgh Fire District is responsible for these duties in the southern portion of the Town of Plattsburgh as well as a portion of the eastern part of the adjacent Town of Schulyer Falls.
Fire Commissioners are responsible for budgeting, maintenance, upkeep and purchasing for the District. The Fire Chief, working for the Board of Fire Commissioners, has full operational control of the Department, equipment and facilities, and shall not be interfered with by the Fire Commissioners, during any response per New York State Law. It is often said that the Fire Chief is "in charge" when the doors are open and the Fire Commissioner is "in charge" when the doors are closed.
The 2010 Board of Fire Commissioners for the South Plattsburgh Fire District are:
- Commissioner Wallace Day (Chairman)
- Commissioner Nancy McGaulley
- Commissioner Ron Santor
- Commissioner Rodney Ralston
- Commissioner Robert Salembier
To conduct the routine administrative and financial business of the Fire District a Treasurer and an Administrative Assistant are appointed. The current Treasurer is Paul Gingrich and the current Administrative Assistant is Nina Coolidge.
